Effective Treatment
A 3- and 6-month follow-up of individuals randomly assigned to either EMDR treatment or standard care (SC) treatment for posttraumatlc stress disorder (PTSD) indicates significantly greater improvements found with EMDR at posttreatment in an earlier article (S. Marcus, P. Marquis, & C. Sakai, 1997)

EMDR
The use of eye movement or other bilateral stimulation combined with a unique therapeutic process can help people process past traumas or disturbing life events and let go of negative beliefs about themselves. Disturbing life events can have a lasting effect on the psyche and may be stored in memory in the same way as severe trauma.
People experience varying degrees of trauma while growing up: sexual abuse, childhood humiliations and shaming, bullying, neglectful or overly critical parents, divorce or separation, moves to new homes or schools, intrusive medical procedures and living in a chaotic family, to name a few. By directly accessing and processing these memories, we can reduce or eliminate symptoms.
A typical EMDR session lasts from 60 to 90 minutes.
EMDR Therapy
Effective Evidence Based Therapy
Four recent, independent, rigorously controlled studies of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) have reported that 84 to 100% of single-trauma victims no longer maintain the posttraumatic stress disorder diagnosis after the equivalent of three 90-minute sessions.

EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or
completing homework between sessions. EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on changing emotions, thoughts, or behaviours resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing process.EMDR therapy is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies. (EMDRIA.ORG)
